DEFROSTING THE COLD WAR MEDIA MADE WOMEN FRACTURED AMERICAN DREAMS RE: VISIONS GENDER BODY PARTS CONSTANT CRAVINGS CONSUMER CULTURE

Over the past 70 years American women have consumed an abundance of often conflicting imagery about our role in the world and bits and pieces of these mass media representations remain imprinted in each of us.

These series of collages called "Media Made Women" examine how's womens identities have been fragmented by a mass media over the past 60 years with their insistence on dictating ever changing standards

Each collage presents a different fragment of the story. Utilizing collage they becomes the perfect expression for the fragmentation we have all experienced. The art work is composed of hundreds of mass media images appropriated from sources as varied as vintage women's magazines from the 1940s through the 70s, vintage advertising illustration, retro romance comics, pulp fiction novels and vintage children's books

WOMEN'S LIB A STORMS APPROACHING hand cut paper collage 48"x84" My coming of age in the early 1970's coincided with the Women's Liberation movement, and for a teen girl trying to navigate the changing environment it was like being in the middle of a storm.It was an explosive time and filled with disparate and conflicting expectations on women's proper place. There developed a national dialog about women's"proper place and that was the subtext of American pop culture in the 1970's. While women were out protesting they were still portrayed in ads as happy housewives or docile, childlike or emancipated , liberated sexual women. Women became conscious not only about gender inequality but of the onslaught of fragmentary conflicting messages.

We are restrained by often confining messages in the media of what it means to age as a woman in America. Our identities, expectations and sense of beauty and worth are formed, distorted and influenced by stifling stereotypes portrayed in the media and fragments of these images remain in us, internalized in childhood long before the information is relevant.
